Every Contemporary Video Game with Official F1 Cars

Formula 1 is, for many, the pinnacle of motorsport - certainly the open-wheeled variety. With a global audience, Netflix documentaries, wildly popular social media presence and coverage from the world’s media, it’s hard to avoid F1.‍The same is true in sim racing and video games. There are the main official titles, but these specialised single-seater cars also make it into other releases too, and are often the quickest machines available.‍ Here’s where you can drive old and new licenced Formula 1 cars virtually in contemporary platforms.

EA SPORTS F1 24

To drive the real-world current Formula 1 season, your best option is the official EA SPORTS video games. With F1 24 releasing last May, and F1 25 anticipated at some point this year, on PC and console.

The current title includes every driver, track, sponsor and team from last season, plus a wealth of game modes. Online multiplayer, a mobile-game-style F1 World area, My Team management and also a revised Driver Career option. It’s a complete package available on PC and current consoles.

If the current season is not so important to you, then you could pick up EA SPORTS F1 23 for a reduced rate – although, sadly, all official F1 games prior to that 2023 edition have been removed from sale.

Real Racing 3

This is a free-to-play mobile game on iOS and Android by Electronic Arts. As this is the same publisher as the aforementioned F1 game, it also includes the 2024 Formula 1 grid.

Cars, liveries and selected tracks are available. Sure, this isn’t as serious as the main F1 24 game, but for those who are younger and have a tablet, or you’re looking for a game to play while travelling, RR3 is the only official F1 driving option.

Gran Turismo 7

No, the current F1 cars are absent within Polyphony Digital’s ever-popular driving game, but there is Formula 1 content.

Classic, real-world, open-wheelers are included, namely the Honda RA272 and Mercedes-Benz W 196 R.
The former was driven by Richie Ginther to claim the Japanese manufacturers’ first-ever F1 win at the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix.

The German car, meanwhile, was driven by Juan Manuel Fangio to the 1955 title. In the game though, as is expected, it’s very expensive, costing 20 million credits.

Automobilista 2

If you’re looking for classic F1 machinery, however, Automobilista 2 has the strongest licenced roster by quite a margin.

There are 17 from the real-world, a mixture of Lotus, Brabham and McLaren vehicles, each offering a different driving experience.

Particulate stand-puts include the Brabham BT46 B, which infamously included a short-lived fan at the rear generating extra downforce. Then there’s the 1997 McLaren MP4/12, or the McLaren MP4/6 used by Ayrton Senna to win the 1991 world championship.

iRacing

It may have only won one race, and the team changed aerodynamic philosophy soon after, but there is an official F1 car available for iRacing - one that even conforms to the current ruleset.

The Mercedes-AMG F1 W13 E Performance hails from 2022, the first season of the ‘ground affect’ rules currently in use. It was driven by Sir Lewis Hamilton and George Russell.

It’s also very difficult to drive, which we suppose it should be. You can also purchase the Mercedes-AMG F1 W12 E Performance from the previous, 2021 season, which was used by Hamilton in that season finale…

Live for Speed

This sim platform may be older than Skype or Olivia Rodrigo, literally, but remarkably, it is still receiving support from the development team.

If you purchase the S2 Licence, it includes a real-world F1 car. The BMW Sauber F1.06, more specifically, driven by Nick Heidfeld, Jacques Villeneuve and Robert Kubica in 2006.

That season, its best result was third, which both Heidfeld and Kubica achieved.

Assetto Corsa - Ferrari 70th Anniversary Pack

While the base game is absent of Formula 1 machinery, there are three official F1 vehicles in Assetto Corsa’s DLC pack - Ferrari 70th Anniversary.

This is headlined by the SF70H, the hybrid machine used is 2017 by Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Räikkönen and taking five victories that season.

Then there’s the 312 F1-67 from 1967, when it was campaigned by five different drivers to varying degrees of success - Chris Amon taking four third-placed finishes.

But our favourite must be the F2004, from that season, with the screaming V10 engine. Michael Schumacher took an astounting 13 race wins behind the wheel of this incredible machine.
